On n1, there was a plugin that was let you trade stocks using ingame money. I could buy shares of Google using in game money and if their value increases I can sell them to make a profit, and if their value decreases then I've made a loss. It was a stimulating way to make money on n1 and people invested their money with the players who made the best returns. There were "companies" dedicated to trading stocks and it was unlike anything i've seen on other servers even to today.
Why the stock market plugin? It's not gonna be as profitable as silver or gold even for the best traders but its fun, its interesting, its risky and its in some ways educational. I can name people who became interested in finance or went on to trade stocks casually irl because of ccnet.
Put simply it's the most skill based way of making money. If you're good at making money with the stocks plugin then you can get the same returns by trading stocks irl. Also like irl, if you don't know what you're doing you're going to lose money. Stocks go up but also down. In that way it's also the most risky way of making money. You're not gonna lose money grinding silver or gold.
In n1 there was one fatal flaw with the plugin that led to its downfall. There was a 15 min delay between prices changing irl and updating in game which was very exploitable. However the solution to this is clear. When you buy or sell a stock it should be delayed for 15 minutes so you dont trade using outdated prices. Its as simple as that.
